This is a Goan recipe, modifies a little. I got this from a Goan aunt who makes very delicious Goan curries. It is easy to make and nice for an elegant dinner party :)
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
Prawns - 750 gm
(This should be the approximate weight, after de-shelling and de-veining them. To get this weight, you need to have around 1.25 kg of prawns)
Onions -4, small
Goan coconut vinegar -2tbsp
Garlic -25 cloves
Tomato Paste - 2 tbsp
Tomato - 1 big, ripe
Coriander leaves-1/2 cup
Coriander stem and roots -1/2 cup
Kashmiri red chilli powder-4 tsp
Turmeric - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 1 tsp
Cumin powder - 1 tsp
Garam masala -1/2 tsp
Poppy seeds - 3/4 tsp
Maze - 1/2 flower
Dark soya sauce - 1 tsp
Worcestershire sauce - 1 tbsp
Salt- to taste
Method:
1. Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder, salt and 1 tbsp of coconut vinegar.
2. Mince together onions and garlic. Keep aside.
3. Beat poppy seeds, mace, 1 tbsp of coconut vinegar and coriander stems and roots into a fine paste. Chop the tomato too and set it aside.
4. Heat oil in a earthen pot. Add onion-garlic mince. Stir till it turns brown. Add the tomato and keep stirring till it is well cooked.
5. Add the tomato paste, chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala powder. Mix well.
6. Now add the poppy seed, mace, coconut vinegar paste Worcestershire sauce and dark soya sauce. Continue stirring it.
7. Pour a cup of water to the mixture. Close the lid and let it cook till the ingredients in the pot mix well and a thick consistency is obtained.
8. Now, add the prawns and mix well. Cover and cook on medium heat till the prawns are cooked.
9. Transfer the prawn gravy to a bowl or plate and serve hot with rice or chapatis.
