Semolina Upma

This is the second Upma recipe I am sharing with you; I had shared vermicelli upma recipe a couple of weeks ago. This is how my mom used to to prepare this breakfast dish. Semolina Upma is a popular breakfast dish in South India. Upma is variously known as Uppuma, Uppittu, Sajjige etc. The addition of green peas and cauliflower makes this dish yummier and healthier!


Preparation time - 10 minutes

Cooking time - 25 minutes




Ingredients :

Semolina - 1 cup

Onion - 2, finely chopped

Ginger - 1/2'' piece, finely chopped

Green chilies - 1-2, finely chopped

Green peas - 1 cup

Cauliflower - 1 1/2 florets chopped

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

Oil - 2 tbsp

Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Water - 2 cups[ warm water]

Salt - to taste

Coriander leaves - 2-3 tbsp, finely chopped


Method :

1. Broil the semolina till you get a fragrant smell. Keep aside.

2. In a deep bottomed pan or a kadai, heat oil. Add the mustard seeds, when they stop crackling add the curry leaves and onions. Saute till they turn translucent.

3. Add the ginger and green chilies, stir continuously for 2-3 minutes. Add the cauliflower florets and stir fry for 3-4 minutes.

4. Add the warm water and add salt, mix well. Add the green peas, close and cook till the florets are a little soft.

5. Add the broiled semolina and stir slowly and cover and cook till the semolina are cooked and the colour has changed[ it takes approx 4-5 minutes]. Adjust the salt.

6. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with pickle or chili garlic sauce.
